St John’s Church, Wexford, Ireland

Saint John’s Church in Kilturk, Co. Wexford, is a ruined Church of Ireland structure built in 1860 that ceased to be in use by 1975. According to Parliamentary Papers from January 1820 there was an earlier Church of Ireland structure at this site, built sometime between 1808 and 1812 however the church must have not been very structurally sound as Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary of 1837 mentions, “The church is a neat edifice, it originally had a tower, which fell down soon after its erection”. A Catholic Church predated both of these structures but there is little evidence of it on the ground today, several records in the Dúchas Folklore collection mention the destruction of an ‘ancient temple’ dedicated to Saint Luana that was, “was pulled down to provide stones wherewith to build the “Church of Ireland” structure – towards which the government gave a grant of £600.” The church at Kilturk is a charming structure, and stands out amongst the relatively barren landscape it occupies.
