Rathronan Church, Tipperary, Ireland

Rathronan Church is prominently sited on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside five
kilometres north of Clonmel on the road to Fethard. It is a very attractive Board of First Fruits Church
of Ireland structure built in 1825 and designed by the noted architect Richard Morrison. It was built
on the site of a late medieval church. Morrison along with his son William Vitruvius designed a
number of notable Irish houses and churches such as Killruddery House in Wicklow, Ballyfin Castle in
Laois and Knockdrin Castle in Westmeath to name just a few. The church closed in 1949 and its
appears its roof was dismantled during the 1960s. The church inside is completely overgrown with
trees and brambles and steady footing is needed to not lose ones step. The beautiful graceful tower
still stands resolutely above the completely overgrown graveyard. Much of the timbers of the
windows of the church remains which is remarkable in itself considering the ruinous nature of the
structure.
