Aillemore Court Tomb, Mayo, Ireland

Aillemore Court Tomb is located on the north-eastern edge of the Mweelrea Mountains overlooking the valley of the Bunsheenshough river below. This fine monument consists of a large gallery measuring 3.2 metres in length and two metres in width. The massive roof slabs that once would have covered the chambers are now pushed to one side and it looks for all the world like something erupted from the core of the chamber! The entrance to the first chamber is marked by two erect jamb stones. This chamber is around 1.7metres (length) by 1.5metres (width). The second chamber is not as long as the first but is wider, measuring 1.9 metres in width at its rear. The entire tomb is surrounded by an elongated cairn that tapers from the front to the back. The cairn is sixteen metres in length and around 14 metres in width. This tomb is orientated west-northwest to east-southeast and holds a commanding position overlooking the valley below. There is a standing stone that is situated a few metres from the tomb that does appear to be aligned with a mountain peak in the distance however I could find no record of this on the National Monuments Services Historic Environment Viewer Map. When visiting the tomb I highly recommend the short trek to the crest of the hill behind it for spectacular views out to Atlantic Ocean in the west where Inishturk, Clare Island and Inishbofin can all be seen on a clear day.
