Carrowcrom Wedge Tomb is picturesquely positioned amongst rolling hillocks set against the backdrop of the Ox Mountains in County Mayo just a few kilometres southeast of Ballina. This wedge tomb is fantastically well preserved, with much of the surrounding cairn existent and orthostats and capstones firmly in place. Like many wedge tombs it has been documented as ‘Dermot and Grainne’s Bed’ in relation the ‘The Pursuit’ of the Fenian cycle. The tomb is orientated northeast-southwest, with its southwest entrance bound by two large jambstones. The short internal gallery is covered by two tremendous overlapped capstones; it measures 3.5 metres in length by around 1.4m in width and 1.1m in height. It must be said this is one of the finest examples of a wedge tomb that I have come across in a number of years and there is something truly wonderful about this site, access is granted over a small stile and it is wonderful to see the care and attention afforded to the monument.
