I came across the old graveyard at Tallanstown on my way to Louth Hall and was immediately struck by the Victorian Gothic archway that marks its entrance, I had to stop. The archway was built in 1868 by the tenants of Lisrenny in memory of William Filgate. There has been a religious site here since the 13th century and a church was once situated nearby, however by the 1800s it was in ruin. Both Catholics and Protestants were buried here. One of the more unusual or striking aspects of the graveyard is the Filgate family mausoleum facing the wall at the most north eastern corner of the graveyard. On first approach only the back of the structure can be seen, then the broken slated roof comes into view before you round the mausoleum and arrive at its ivy covered entrance. Seeing its close proximity to Louth Hall and the beautiful ornate gateway I would definitely recommend a short stop off at the old Tallanstown Graveyard.
