The rolling drumlins of south Armagh are always an evocative background to any historic site and the standing stone at Ballard is no exception. Its surroundings are sparsely populated and the rocky outcrops rise higher and higher towards Slieve Gullion. The standing stone at Ballard, also known as the longstone, is of granite, measuring 1.5 metres in height and 1/2 metre in width. The stone leans to the east and tapers towards a pointed top. It is in a beautifully secluded and silent spot, well worth a visit if near Slieve Gullion.
