Marblehill Wedge Tomb, Galway, Ireland

Marblehill in county Galway is home to several megalithic structures with at least two wedge tomb­­s, one portal tomb and several other unclassified structures within its locale. ­Marblehill is also known by the Irish name of Criogán or An Creigin, meaning rocky ground. The wedge tomb is a situated just off a small field track, it is impressive in length, measuring 7 metres long and about 1.5 metres in width. It is aligned NE – SW with two massive capstones covering the chamber within, it appears that a third capstone has slipped out of place however some sources believe this may be the remains of an outer wall. The entire site is incorporated into a shaped mound on which a number of slabs lie displaced. The variety of monuments at Marblehill truly make this an interesting area to explore.
