Glandore Cemetery, Cork, Ireland

During the course of doing this website I have visited hundreds of graveyards and cemeteries and by and large I find them welcoming, calm and peaceful places however the old cemetery at Glandore is one of those extremely rare exceptions and for whatever reason I wished to leave it as soon as I entered. I can never fully understand the reasons why this happens because as I said these places are nothing new to me but over the years only a handful, maybe less than 15 places I have visited have left me with a serious feeling of unease. Glandore Cemetery is situated on the south coast of Ireland in County Cork and around 10kms east of Skibbereen. The cemetery is quite ruinous and at its center stands the rectangular skeleton of a church, completely overgrown, that has been described as in ruins by 1693, however it was still ‘in repair’ in 1615. The cemetery is listed on the National Monuments Service website as Aghatubrid More. One of the more interesting interments is a pyramid shaped tomb in the corner of the cemetery for John Hussey de Burgh of Kilfinnan Castle who died on 25th April 1887. The cemetery is dotted with a variety of grave-markers most of which are illegible.
