Clogherny Wedge Tomb and Stone Circle is an unusual and somewhat lonely monument situated as it is deep into an area of blanket bog near the Butterlope Glen in County Tyrone. The site is stated to be 700 yards from the roadside as indicated by a shotgun bullet riddled sign, with a further sign saying wear good boots which is an understatement really as the terrain is very hard to navigate. The monument itself is unusual and must have been adapted and expanded over the centuries. At its centre is the earliest monument a wedge tomb with one roofstone still intact. There are two sidestones on either side and one at its back. I have read that the wedge tomb appears to have elements of a court tomb in that in front of it stands components of a possible ante-chamber. The stone circle is around 20 metres in diameter and has around 17 stones most under a metre in height. Early excavations showed that there was stone cobbling between the tomb and the circle and a cairn may have enveloped the earlier wedge tomb. Though remote and difficult to access Clogherny does have a certain wildness to it and thought it can be hard to spot as it is heavily overgrown just stick with the co-ordinates and you will get there!
