All Souls Church Crossboyne, Mayo, Ireland

All Souls Church is a Church of Ireland Board of First Fruits structure in the parish of Crossboyne,
situated 1.5kms south of Claremorris in County Mayo. The National Built Heritage Services website
dates it to around 1819-20 however other evidence appears to suggest that at least the tower and
some of the church structure predates this. For example, in 1837 Samuel Lewis’ Topographical
Dictionary of Ireland described the church as ‘a plain old building with a chancel and a new tower’. It
was recorded in the Connaught Telegraph in 1987 that the tower and vestry was added in 1825 and
a bell that had been bought by the parish in 1817 was installed at that stage. Also an entry into the
minute book of the Crossboyne Vestry from 1818 notes an advance of £351 from the Board of First
Fruits for works at the church at Crossboyne. Though the original date of construction is unknown it
is accepted that the church fell into only occasional use during the 1970s as the protestant
population of the area decreased before it became totally disused in 1990 and since then the roof
has fallen in. The graveyard is incredibly ruinous, somewhat inexplicably so as it appears that some
of the headstones must’ve been vandalised and smashed and at some stage over the past 30 years.
