Carrickkildavnet Castle, Achill Island, Mayo, Ireland

Carrickkildavnet Castle stands on the south east corner of Achill Island and is most famously recognised as one of castles of the Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley also known as Gráinne Mhaol. Though the castle’s construction does predate Gráinne’s life, she is believed to have been born around 1530 and died around 160,3 it was constructed by her predecessors in the O’Malley Clan around 1429. Grace O’ Malley is believed to have had several towers she operated from thus establishing a stronghold along the western seaboard, one on Clare Island and another known as Rockfleet Castle near Newport, County Mayo. The tower house is around 12 metres in height and has three storeys and is situated at the mouth of Achill Sound, where Clew Bay and Blacksod Bay meet. Fragments of a bawn wall can be seen on the north side of the tower.
