Killelan Church, near Moone in County Kildare, has been known as a fortified church, an abbey and a castle. The origins of the church at Killelan are unknown however it is believed that an abbey was built on this site by the Knights Hospitallers in the 13th century. It is thought that the the circular turrets may have been added in the 15th century. A very narrow stairway leads to the roof of the structure but I did not realise that at the time of my visit, the staircase to the roof is hard to spot as the floor level is greatly increased than it would have been in its heyday. The graveyard is has some interesting gravestones but the ground is very uneven so caution is advised.
