Ballylannan Church, Wexford, Ireland

Ballylannan Church is attractively situated on the north bank of where the Corock and Owenduff rivers meet, across from the enigmatic Clonmines Abbey (closed to the public). I can find very little information about the small rectangular church that stands in the centre of the graveyard. In 1824 this small edifice was incorporated into a large family mausoleum for the local Leigh family from Rosegarland, erected by Francis Leigh. At that time a pointed doorway and small window in the north wall were both blocked up, and a tower with spire, and an entrance attached to the south side of the structure, facing the river. Francis lived a further fifteen years before being buried in the mausoleum however sadly he buried his own son soon after its completion in 1827. The graveyard is quite sparse and small with visible headstones dating from 1748 to 2007. Due to the striking tower and the views across to Clonmines abbey, Ballylannan is well wroth a stop if passing through the village of Wellingtonbridge.
